Greetings!
Welcome to the initial issue of the AASHAS Newsletter. In
our Newsletter professionals from the various allied health
services address issues so that all professionals involved in
allied health services can be dedicated to advancing quality
education. All of us involved in the allied health services
need to work together so that we can provide an efficient
continuum of care to our patients or residents. This can best
be accomplished by providing outstanding quality education to
our workers who have the hands- on contact on a daily basis
with the populations we serve. In March, we were privileged to
hold our first national conference at the Ramada Plaza Beach
Resort in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. In this inaugural
newsletter we will provide summaries of several of the
outstanding sessions which took place during the conference.
We hope you will share copies of this electronic newsletter to
many of your colleagues so they can contact us through the
link below to be added to our list of subscribers. We hope you
enjoy this and we look forward to hearing your feedback.

Balancing
Care: What is Medically Necessary vs. Economically
Feasible |
|
Richard Markhoff, Administrator of top rated Broward
Children's Center, Inc. addresses the important issue of
achieving the balance between improving the life of the
patient versus what the payer of the service is willing to pay
for the services provided. This conflict must also be
reconciled with the mission of the organization providing the
service. Markhoff methodically outlines the issues that have
to be addressed in balancing the needs of the organization,
the payer of the services, and the wellbeing of the resident.

Open Forum |
|
Robert D. Hays, Ph.D. chaired an open forum to end the
inaugural AASHAS conference on a high note. All attendees
exchanged ideas concerning what should be one of the next
major activities for AASHAS. After much heated discussion,
several attendees agreed to contact governmental authorities
to uncover a pressing issue which needs to be developed into a
course for the long-term care industry. AASHAS will then take
the lead in developing the material. Dr. Evelyne Wolf agreed
to chair the CE committee. She will arrange for AASHAS to
become a provider of CE credits to the profession. It was
further decided at the forum to have a follow up
mini-conference - perhaps in the Fall, 2005 to further develop
the future agenda for AASHAS. All present agreed to spread the
word about our new exciting organization to expand both our
individual and institutional membership roles.
